The Thomas Center Galleries will open the exhibition “PIECES OF DREAMS The Art of Lorelei Esser” on Oct. 4 from 5:30-8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through  Jan. 4, 2014.

Three additional events to be announced are also scheduled to enhance the exhibition during the course of its run. Check the www.gvlculturalaffairs.org website for dates and times.

This major immersive installation of three-dimensional sculptures, mobiles and wall reliefs created from repurposed materials features pieces from Gainesville resident Lorelei Esser’s over 35 years as a visual artist. This exhibition will consist of artwork lining the walls, falling from the sky and growing up through the earth. Objects floating in space will suggest the sensation of flying to the viewers.

“PIECES OF DREAMS” is a gathering of past and present art works. The overarching theme is imagining new and timeless mythological sculptures from what most of us would think of as refuse. Esser’s work is a whimsical, yet attentive, integration of many disparate found objects into intelligent, moving sculptural forms.

A native of Florida, Esser studied at Santa Fe Community College and the University of Florida. She spent a year living and studying in Holland, then another year in Thailand, creating art inspired by the nature and culture surrounding her in each country. Back in Gainesville, she landed an Individual Artist Fellowship from the state of Florida that gave her an exhibition and catalog, as well as a commission for the Natural Resources Building in Tallahassee. For several years, she was a prop and costume designer for the Hippodrome State Theatre and for several movies filmed in Florida. Throughout this aspect of her professional career, she continued to create her artwork.
