Tom Petty Park officially reopened June 6 to the delight of Gainesville residents and visitors who welcomed the renovations and new amenities. Improvements include eight new pickleball courts, seating areas, shade canopies, a multiuse trail, and a concessions and storage building with public restrooms. The reopening followed several years of planning, design and public engagement, as well as one year of construction.

“I sincerely thank all the neighbors, park users and community members who helped shape this park throughout the design with their feedback and involvement. It truly was a community-driven effort and it’s really great to see it all come to life,” said Wild Spaces & Public Places (WSPP) Director Rachel Mandell.

“It’s a great addition to the eastside,” said pickleball player Mary Rossow, admiring the new courts. “I came to every community engagement session and the courts turned out wonderfully.”

The municipal park also features new landscaping, a stormwater pond and a Bee City Gainesville pollinator garden

“The northern portion of the park has long been home to sports facilities, while the southern part serves as a more wooded and passive recreational space,” said Gainesville Interim City Manager Andrew Persons at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Staff worked carefully to locate new amenities in a way that reflects a thoughtful approach to both recreation and conservation.”

A solar lighting system for the parking lot and lighting along the paved trail enhance visibility throughout the park. LED lighting illuminates the multipurpose field, the softball/baseball fields and the tennis and pickleball courts. The courts opened for play in February.

“The park brings in neighbors across Gainesville – from the northwest to the northeast,” said nearby resident Denise Devonish. “Everyone benefits.”

Attendees at the ceremony enjoyed refreshments and music from the 1970s and 1980s, including hits by Tom Petty. The 22.5-acre municipal park was named for the rock legend in 2018. Petty was born in Gainesville and lived a few streets from the park.

“The improvements add new opportunities for recreation while preserving the parts of the park that people already love,” said Gainesville City Commissioner Bryan Eastman, District IV. “The park feels like Tom Petty Park — just a better version of it.”

Park renovations began in May 2025. The $2.6 million cost was fully funded through the voter-approved WSPP half-cent sales tax.

The project supports the city’s commitment to building great places to live and experience that serve residents and visitors.
